Inspect before cutting
Look for winter damage, new buds, nests, and broken branches. Prune dead or hazardous growth first and confirm the right timing for each plant.
Test irrigation
Run every zone, clean filters, flush lines, and repair leaks. Move emitters to match plant growth and keep spray off walls and pavement.
Refresh surfaces
Rake displaced gravel, replenish thin mulch, sweep patios, and clear drains. Do not pile mulch against trunks or bury plant crowns.
Plan improvements
Note bare areas, heat problems, traffic shortcuts, and plants that repeatedly struggle. Spring observations can guide future shade, planting, pathway, or irrigation changes.
Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
