Know what needs protection

Recently planted, marginally hardy, container-grown, and actively growing plants are often most vulnerable. Healthy established native and adapted plants may need less intervention.

Water thoughtfully

Moist soil can buffer temperature better than very dry soil, but avoid creating ice or saturating roots. Water earlier in the day when conditions support it.

Cover correctly

Use breathable frost cloth or fabric that reaches the ground and traps warmth from the soil. Keep plastic from touching foliage and remove coverings when temperatures recover.

Protect irrigation

Insulate exposed backflow and piping as appropriate, disconnect hoses, and follow manufacturer guidance. Repair freeze damage before running the system again.

Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
