Read the plant and soil

Temporary afternoon wilting may recover by morning, while persistent wilt, scorch, or leaf drop deserves investigation. Check moisture below the surface rather than judging only by dry mulch.

Water deeply

Deep watering encourages a broader root zone. Short daily watering can keep roots shallow unless required for new establishment. Avoid runoff by using slower or repeated cycles.

Reduce reflected heat

West-facing walls, gravel, synthetic turf, and pavement can intensify temperature. Add shade, plant layers, or lighter materials where heat repeatedly damages plants.

Delay unnecessary stress

Avoid heavy pruning, transplanting, or aggressive fertilizing during extreme heat unless safety or plant health requires action. Support the plant until conditions moderate.

Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
