Adjust irrigation gradually
Reduce frequency as temperatures fall, but do not abandon new plants or trees. Check soil moisture and follow current local rules rather than changing the controller by date alone.
Clean without over-clearing
Remove diseased material and heavy debris from drains, but consider leaving some healthy stems and seed heads for winter interest and habitat.
Inspect structures
Look for loose pavers, open joints, wall movement, damaged lighting, and erosion while issues are visible. Make drainage repairs before winter moisture and freezes.
Plan next year's work
Photograph areas that were too hot, difficult to maintain, or underused. Fall is a good time to develop a coordinated plan for spring construction.
Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
