Light the route
Prioritize steps, grade changes, gates, and transitions between surfaces. Use overlapping pools of light rather than a runway of equally spaced fixtures.
Control glare
Aim fixtures away from eyes, windows, neighbors, and traffic. Shielded, downward-focused light usually improves comfort and keeps the night sky darker.
Choose focal points
Highlight one tree, textured wall, specimen plant, or water feature instead of lighting everything. Contrast creates depth and a calmer composition.
Plan access and growth
Place wiring and fixtures where they can be serviced. Allow for plant growth so leaves do not immediately block beams or trap heat around fixtures.
Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
