Spring
Inspect every zone, repair winter damage, flush drip lines, and begin with conservative run times. Increase only when warmer weather and active growth justify it.
Summer and monsoon season
Water deeply in the cooler part of the day. Use rain shutoff features when available, pause after useful rainfall, and check that intense storms have not exposed tubing or washed mulch away.
Fall
Gradually reduce frequency as temperatures fall, but continue supporting roots. Newly planted trees and shrubs may still need consistent moisture even when the air feels cool.
Winter
Protect exposed components from freezes and water only when conditions, plant needs, and local rules support it. Do not run irrigation over frozen ground or create icy walkways.
Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
