Start with zones
Place higher-use areas near the home and lower-water areas farther out. Group plants by water need so irrigation can be precise instead of treating the entire property the same.
Layer living plants
Combine shade trees, shrubs, grasses, flowering perennials, and groundcovers. Layers create seasonal interest, habitat, privacy, and a softer transition between hard surfaces.
Use hardscape intentionally
Paths, patios, walls, and boulders should solve circulation or grade problems. Too much unshaded hardscape can store heat, so balance it with canopy and planted areas.
Plan for maturity
Space plants according to their mature size and move emitters outward as roots expand. A new xeriscape may look open at first but should become fuller over time.
Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
