Water the root zone, not the trunk

Place emitters away from the crown and expand their position as the plant grows. For trees and large shrubs, distribute multiple emitters around the outer root zone rather than concentrating water at one point.

Apply water slowly

New Mexico soils vary. Slow delivery helps water soak in instead of running across compacted ground. If runoff appears, divide the total watering time into shorter cycles with a soaking interval.

Group compatible plants

Put plants with similar water needs on the same valve whenever possible. Desert-adapted shrubs should not share an irrigation schedule with thirsty annuals or lawn.

Inspect hidden parts

Mulch can hide tubing, loose fittings, and clogged emitters. Run the zone, listen for leaks, and check every outlet at least several times during the growing season.

Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
