Where gravel works
Gravel suits desert-style planting, drainage bands, and areas where a durable mineral surface supports the design. Choose a size and color that relate to the home and stay stable under foot.
Where organic mulch works
Wood mulch can moderate soil temperature and support moisture retention around many trees and shrubs. Keep it away from direct contact with trunks, siding, and ignition-sensitive areas.
Consider heat
Dark rock in full sun can become extremely hot and increase reflected heat around plants and windows. Shade, lighter materials, and planted coverage can reduce that effect.
Install the right depth
Too little mulch exposes soil and invites weeds; too much can bury crowns, trap moisture, or move during storms. Prepare edges and drainage before spreading material.
Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
