Match the microclimate

A sheltered east-facing bed is different from a west wall that reflects afternoon heat. Observe sun, shade, wind, low spots, and roof runoff before choosing plants.

Check mature size

Small nursery plants can become large shrubs or trees. Allow room away from foundations, walkways, utilities, and sightlines to reduce future pruning and conflicts.

Plan four seasons

Combine evergreen structure with flowering perennials, ornamental grasses, and plants that provide fall color or winter form. Stagger bloom times instead of relying on one short season.

Establish plants carefully

Even water-wise plants need consistent moisture while roots establish. Transition gradually to a deeper, less frequent schedule suited to the plant and soil.

Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
