Trace the water path

During a safe, moderate rain, observe where water enters, slows, crosses walkways, and leaves the property. Photograph problem areas for later planning.

Clear drainage features

Remove debris from roof gutters, downspouts, channel drains, swales, and curb outlets. Confirm that decorative rock has not blocked flow.

Stabilize exposed soil

Repair bare slopes, displaced mulch, and eroded edges before a major storm. Use planting, rock, or designed erosion control appropriate to the location.

Protect the home

Soil and hardscape should generally move water away from foundations and entrances. If water approaches the building, consult a qualified drainage professional promptly.

Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
