Water before the day heats up
Early morning is usually the most efficient window. Soil is cooler, winds are often lighter, and plants have time to absorb moisture before afternoon heat. Avoid routine midday watering, when evaporation is highest.
Match the method to the plant
Drip irrigation should deliver water slowly at the root zone. Spray irrigation for lawn needs even coverage without misting sidewalks or walls. Established trees need deeper, less frequent watering than shallow-rooted annuals.
Watch the weather
Pause irrigation after meaningful rain and reduce run times during cool periods. Windy conditions can distort sprinklers and waste water. Check current local watering rules before changing a controller schedule.
Test instead of guessing
After watering, probe the soil several inches down. Moisture should reach the active root zone without leaving the surface soggy or producing runoff. Adjust one zone at a time and observe plant response.
Watering rules, rebate programs, permit requirements, and product instructions can change. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate local agency or manufacturer.
